I spent a lot of yesterday fretting about whether I would have to give up running before I’ve really started. Knowing just how much agonizing pain you can go through with shin splints meant I spent most of the day stretching, taking anti -inflamatory diclofenic pills and rubbing Ibuleve into my inside calf muscles on both legs.
Thanfully, I woke today to both an absolutely beautiful morning and almost pain free shins so I decided to do one of my favourite runs around Streatham that takes me up Green Lane into Norbury and up Norbury Hill to a place called Crown Point. From here, I cut back in to Streatham Common and visit one of my all time favourite places: the Rookery.
The Rookery is a small, secret walled garden at the top of Streatham Common Southside, hidden between a tiny café and a small parking lot. Next to it is an old antique Corporation of London drinking trough for cattle. Inside, the Rookery is beautifully landscaped and the entrance looks down over a rolling hill that sometimes holds open air plays in summer with the audience seated on the grassy hill and the ‘stage’ being where it flattens out.
There are then several different gardens which are all themed, my favourite being the ‘white garden’ where all the walls, plants and benches have been painted white and each bench has a dedication to someone who has passed away.
