So after running around suburban London for almost a year, today was the day when I came closest to being hit by a car.
I did another five mile route today, combining a couple of existing routes along the way and, despite it only being the fifth day, my legs are feeling up to the task of some increased mileage.
I set off from home, headed towards Thornton Heath and then doubled back down London Road into Streatham.
As I was merrily running along London Road, I could see the nose of a 4×4 coming up from a subterranean garage. As I approached, the car stopped and so I went to run by and, just as I began to pass the bonnet, the driver pulled out again, leaving me to scramble to one side as the left front corner just clipped my hip as I passed.
Now I’m definitely not one of those blokes who doesn’t like women drivers but I had to despair with this particular one. For a start, she was so short, she could hardly see over the wheel, for another she was coming from a disadvantageous viewpoint anyway thanks to the ramp – neither obviously here fault, but in such cases, surely you should be paying a bit more attention.

Nearly hit by a car? I take it you didn’t carry out a risk assessment?
Here’s one I did earlier with my site hat on and not my sun hat on
