Well that’s the power of advertising for you

If anyone wanted proof of how advertising and endorsement work, here it is. Since Garmin sent me my new Forerunner 405CX running watch at the weekend, I must have had about ten people ask me about the difference between it and the previous model. Perhaps I should have asked them to send me the level up, the 310XT which allows you to do triathlons as you can include swimming as a sports option!

Anyway, today I decided to once again compare the two on a run. My idea was to run a half mile warm up, followed by half mile splits between going all out and then slowing down for half a mile. Of course, with only three miles to play with today, I did:

half mile w/u
half mile fast
half mile recovery at regular pace
half mile fast
half mile recovery at regular pace

but then had another half mile to play with, so I ran 2/5 of a mile fast and then 3/5 of a mile cool down.

Once again, the 405 showed a much larger calorie consumption than the 405CX, which was surprising. As the latter takes heart rate into account, I thought that by raising it for sustained periods of the run that the 405CX might have caught up.

It was only post run that I realised I had different personal values stored in each watch. The 405 still had details from when I first started when I was a little heavier and my resting heart rate was higher. I’ve now put this right and will re-test again tomorrow.

Miles today: 3
Target: 1059
Miles to date: 1,475.28
