Day 172: Slow and easy!!

I like Thursdays as I can see the weekend looming on the horizon and I love my weekends!! Freddie had football training over at West Hendred tonight so a quick trip home after work and change and back out the door, it was nice to see everyone again as it has been a while due to the weather which incidentally is going to get worse!!! Home and then out for a run and it was a late on with the streets and the drizzle to myself I quite enjoyed it apart from the niggle!!!

Day 171: Hump day done all down hill!!

I have started to think more about things that are important to me. I have spent much of my adult life playing sport all year round Rugby/wendyball in winter and then a summer of cricket and have always tried to be a team man playing within a team ethic and trying to implement tactics and training of coaches, although I have at times been a maverick where I have based my game on gut instinct sometimes this works sometimes it goes horribly wrong and you look like a complete fool. It comes down to confidence and self belief and this can be misconstrued as arrogance or cockiness, I am neither I am just plain brilliant!!

I was reading about Kevin Pietersen this week and his axing from the England team and from my point of view its a real shame as he is an exceptional talent and has scored more run for England than any other batsmen ( he is also one of my favourite players!!) but you at times have to conform, you have to be seen to be doing the right things for the team and as a senior player if he wasn’t doing that then perhaps it was time to cut him loose. The other argument is that are we the only nation to get rid of our best players too early was a better time to have given him until the next Ashes in 2015 and then he would of retired anyway. Precocious talent needs managing surely someone could manage his huge ego I feel that Flower, Cook and Prior got into an ego fight with Pietersen and lost and therefore were not prepared to work with him anymore. A real shame for English cricket at a real low period.

Oh my calf still hurts!!

Day 170: Pain in the leg!!

I am getting so frustrated with this calf muscle its driving me mad!! I may have to pull out of the Grove half marathon if it doesn’t get any better, and that would really piss me off as I am determined to go sub 2hr and feel I have it in me but where training was going so well and I was feeling good and really enjoying training (honestly I was!!) its now a real fight to go out and run! I am not a quitter and stand by the motto of “winners never quit and quitters never win”, so I will not give up easily. I can cope with 3 miles but will my leg cope with 7,8,10 and 13 miles!!

Day 169: Monday…. theres a theme appearing here!!!

Another Monday another good weekend so therefore I hate Mondays, not only that but we lost to the French and the Welsh won so I am bordering on angry!!! Still lets hope next weekend is better we should batter the Scots at Murryfield and the Irish will beat the Welsh I can feel this in my water!

Running was tough and my calf although I’ve taken it easy is causing me real concern as unfortunately with this challenge you can’t rest and all it would take it a couple of days rest!! So slow running continues but at least I’m out there doing it!!

Day 168: A fighting come back!!

Sunday and under 11’s football a lazy morning and some apologising had to be done!! Kick off wasn’t until the afternoon and was a local fixture against Wantage town so no real distance to travel, so I set off for my run in a little pain with the calf so another slow run was in order. My fellow coaches were both away with Mark skiing and Jenny working so Chris Blake stepped in to help me with the lads. We arrived and the sun was out and confidence was high after last weeks performance, so a quick but intense warm up and some short passing drills and then the chat, “don’t think its going to be easy” you’ve still got to work hard” etc etc but I didn’t really feel the desire from the team, unfortunately this played out as the boys just didn’t seem to want it and were quickly 2-0 down as Wantage hit them on the break and some sloppy defending from long throws had Grove in utter disarray, We managed to pull one back but immediately went 3-1 and heads dropped half time couldn’t come quick enough as we held on for the last 5 mins of the half without conceding.

The boys were down and looked beaten but a Henry V type speech, some words of wisdom and some tough love was given at half time and they looked full of determination as they headed out for the second half. Then it began, they started to perform, they passed, they moved and they took Wantage apart and were quickly level through Jack Blake and Olly Hughes(an inspired substitution!!) then they just camped in the Wantage half but couldn’t score a winner!! A fantastic second half performance well worthy of praise its just a shame they started at half time otherwise they would have run away with it!! Well done lads proud of you!!!

Day 167: Here it is I love the 6 Nations!!

So today is the start of the 6 Nations and a tough opener against the French in France and I awoke with a big sense of anticipation so planned the day to get to the Rugby club for Kick off!! No under 9’s football this morning boo! So I missed the weekly banter with the other parents but instead spent the morning in bed and then decided to do some baking with Poppy. We made a lemon drizzle cake which was amazing (even if we do say so ourselves!!) and I then prepared a curry for the evening.

Sharon’s cousin Simon joined me for my run this morning/early afternoon as he is training for a half marathon in April as well. So we set off and I thought it would be a good idea to run via the Rugby club and over to the airfield big mistake outside the club was under water!! So a turn round and a different route was chosen and we had a good natter on the way around all in all a good run, nice and slow to help with this pesky calf!! Cheers Si enjoyed it!!

Then came an afternoon at the club a great game which ended in glorious defeat for England who let the game get away to early but fought back magnificently to lead 24-19 with 4 mins to go, but the French being the French scored a great try to win the game at the death 24-26!! Gutted.

I arrived home very drunk and in big trouble sorry Sharon I am a bad man!

Day 164:Easy now!!

It felt good today the calf that is!! So ran a bit quicker but at a steady pace just need to keep my discipline when running and not try to run too quick. I am fascinated by people colloquialisms and having worked in various areas of the south west I pick up on a lot of southwestisms!! I shall give you my top 5 humorous ones
1. The inability to say the letter l in words ie Gold, Fold, bold are pronounces Goud, Foud, Boud ie Thatchers Gold as it is written on the label is now called Thatchers Goud!!
2. My Babber ill leave this one as its just odd
3. Gurt Lush is it really
4. Drawlings – This is a personal favourite of mine as it apparently means drawings but I had to check about 10 times when the guy asked me to find out what he was talking about! “you got any of them there drawlings my babber!!”
5.The use of the word “mind” to emphasise a point “don’t put that there! mind”

I loves it I do but in all seriousness this is what happens all over this very small nation of ours and I can’t put my finger on why it changes from Bristol to Oxford then Reading and then London etc etc are we a nation on illiterates or are we all right just depending of where you are from!!

The calf still hurts but not too bad and eased off by end of mile 1!! I find that my brain seems to concentrate on the area of pain more and the more I try not to think about it the more concious I am of the pain!!

Day 162: Ouch!!

Yes its a bloody Monday and after yesterdays high it was a low not because of work but because although I took it easy yesterday evening when running I have done some damage to my calf it bloody hurts!! I have been running niggle free for about a month and a half and have been really enjoying it but todays run was sore!! I as most of you know am a little stupid at times but had decided to go easy again tonight and started off at a really comfortable 9 min mile pace for the first half mile then the calf eased up and running felt ok, I then without using any intelligence started to increase my pace. This was fine until I finished and almost immediately it tightened and I felt like I had a golf ball in my calf!!

I hope this is a temporary set back and will be slowing down my runs until it eases hot bath now with bubbles!!!
