Day 57: I’m broken

After feeling pretty good and not having to face the heat and hills of Spain I sped it up yesterday. Big mistake, my calves were rather tight this morning and knew I would have to take it slow. At weekends sometimes Zac jumps on his bike and follows me round and today he decided to put on his trainers and run with me. That was great as I knew having him along would mean I have to take it easy. He runs a bit of cross country at school but not loads and knew 3 miles might be a bit of a challenge…. He breezed it, clearly the hours and hours of swimming he does translates into overall fitness. Perhaps he could be challenging the Brownlee brothers in a few years.

So I am psychologically broken after having been shown up by a 10 year old and as I limp around the house my calves are telling me I am physically broken.

Day 20: Smiles all round

So I crumbled and shaved the beard, Kate breathed a sigh of relief and I got my first smile in weeks. My brother Ben whooped, “IN YOUR FACE”, and promptly shaved off his beard, then his girlfriend gave him his first smile in weeks. Needless to say facebook is full of gloating.

Calves are still tight and I am starting to get narked off as I want to get back to BMF. I’m terrified that if I go I will injure myself and then it’s game over for the challenge. I guess the injury hasn’t really come back and my times are coming down again, I’ll give it another week before I go back.

Day 8: A fete worse than death

Took Zac swimming training this morning, he never ceases to amaze me at how he knocks out length after length, hour after hour and come out with a smile on his face. His two hours made me think that what I was doing wasn’t anything in comparison. He is only 10 though and full over limitless energy. While he was training I went for my run and I tried to run with a smile on my face and you know what, I’m sure it made it easier and made the calves scream a little bit less.

I also did a 15 mins of yoga on the grass before and after and whilst I am stiff as a board and useless at it, doing it barefoot on the grass was actually really nice – I think I might be turning into a hippy!

After, it was the school fete. Whilst the kids love it and it raises good money for the school I dread it. Standing in the blazing sun, queuing up for sweets, cakes, face painting and the bouncy castle surrounded by 100s of kids, many of them whinging, including mine, is not the perfect way to spend the weekend – I think I might be turning into a grumpy old man too!

Day 5: Everyday I’m Shuffling

After 24 hrs of worrying I set of at what felt like little more than a walk, very conscious that I didn’t have to break any records and just needed to get round. Yes it hurt but it wasn’t unbearable. Lot’s of ice when I got home, Lots of stretching and Lots of using the foam roller that a friend at work has lent me. I have also booked to see the physio at work in the morning. It’s not free but it is cheap and I can get in quicker than if I went through BUPA (I may need them yet though). Let’s see how that goes but I am definitely feeling more positive. It was actually quite nice just taking my time and having a nose in peoples houses as I shuffled past.
