Monday and with the great return to work it was business as usual, lots of cars on the road, no space in the car park and hundreds of people out running as part of their New Years resolutions. I’m hoping that all these new runners means I will be getting a few more people out to run with me over the next couple of months. Dd my three miles at lunchtime and even though I was plodding it the pace wasn’t too bad. Usual aches and pains! Have hit a bit of a milestone with over 700 miles now ran.
I went to British Military Fitness (BMF) tonight for the first time since I started this challenge. I’ve been thinking about for a long time now; I’ve missed it, I’ve lost some of my general conditioning and strength and I’m paying for it. I’ve been worried about getting injured so I just went I red bibs, the middle group, and took it easy. Wore my Asics Fuji Cross country trainers and they felt like bricks compared to my Nikes. Really enjoyed it but know my quads and hamstrings are going to be complaining tomorrow. Let’s see what the morning brings.

Followed the quick hilly 3 mile loop today and my left quad/groin felt really weak. Whenever I lift my knee above parallel it seems to give up and really hurts. Also tweaked my right calf, That I injured on day 4 trying to run quickly downhill.
Majorly disappointed with my legs today.

Great day at the beach followed by a nice swim in the pool followed by a trip to the Paseo for an ice cream.
Got back late and realised on the drive back how dark it was up on the hillside without any streetlamps. And then also realised I didn’t have a torch and there was no moonlight whatsoever.
Set off and within 10 metres my mind was playing tricks on me, can I hear footsteps behind me, what’s that rustling in the forest to my right, how close is that dog barking? Needless to say considering it was quite hot and hilly I was going at quite a pace. Legged it along the spooky cycleway and still believe there was a werewolf about to pounce out of the bushes and that vampire that was getting ever closer behind me was matching me stride for stride so I wouldn’t suspect him but I could hear his footsteps echoing behind me. I think he was wearing Asics.
Strode back up the hills, not shortening my stride and left those evil buggers behind me. Will be going in the mornings from now on!

Went to see Sir Tom Jones last night, I love him. Not in a throw your knickers on the stage type love but love his voice. It is immense. The fact that he was performing just across the road from me made it even better. The man is 72 and, unlike all the other ageing rockers who should just give up like McCartney, Elton and Cliff, he still sounds brilliant. He did look a bit less nimble on stage and it made me wonder whether he might be doing the 1095 challenge as well.
The achilles is bearing up and after starting to read Barefoot Running by Barefoot Ken Bob Saxton I have realised I may have adjusted my landing a bit but I am doing it all wrong. Made a few adjustments today which seemed to help from a comfort point of view but need to read the book properly if I am going to be serious about making the transition to barefoot running techniques. Does anyone know of any classes that teach proper technique?

My mind and body are loving the challenge, I am full of energy and it feels like at the end of my run I am just getting into it and want to go on for much longer. My legs ain’t having any of it and it’s really frustrating, it’s like they aren’t mine or at least have a mind of their own at the moment. They are complaining quite a lot. If I didn’t need them so much I would tell them to get lost. Think I will just give them a stern talking to for now and hopefully they will buck their ideas up.

So my achilles is really hurting today and I know I have to run slowly again. Thinking that having someone to run with will help I call my mate up to come running with me, his name is Troy. He didn’t bring a horse with him but it did help.
Stopped off to stretch in the park and got bitten to buggery by the midges. If only there was a Trojan midge then that would have been really funny.

Set off this evening and it was chucking it down. I love running in the rain, it makes me feel really energised. And then half we round the park a huge rainbow came out so I had to stop and get a quick picture.
And then 2.5 miles in my achilles twanged a bit and made me do a couple of numpty hops mid run, looked like a right wally and I am pretty sure I may have eeeeked like a girl. Currently sat with the ice packs from my kids lunch boxes wrapped round my ankle……Stupid bloody bad luck rainbow!

So I crumbled and shaved the beard, Kate breathed a sigh of relief and I got my first smile in weeks. My brother Ben whooped, “IN YOUR FACE”, and promptly shaved off his beard, then his girlfriend gave him his first smile in weeks. Needless to say facebook is full of gloating.
Calves are still tight and I am starting to get narked off as I want to get back to BMF. I’m terrified that if I go I will injure myself and then it’s game over for the challenge. I guess the injury hasn’t really come back and my times are coming down again, I’ll give it another week before I go back.

Had a rehydration sachet before I went to bed last night and one this morning which seemed to do a good job keeping away the hangover. Got home and then it was time for Isabel’s dance show. I was expecting a bit of uncoordinated stomping around by a load of little girls but I have to say even I was impressed and happily sat through and enjoyed all the routines, even the ones without Isabel in. Pretty sure they nicked some of the moves from my dancing last night. Not sure I was happy with all the make up though, made my little girl look all grown up.
